The family of Isabella Brown is currently considering filing a lawsuit against the Mall Of America (MOA) and several of it’s security guards for excessive use of force. Brown, 14, and her friends were in the Minneapolis shopping center past the 4pm curfew for children under 16 without an adult escort.

Around 5pm, Brown was in the public transportation center attempting to get change for a $20 bill so she could take the bus home. Video footage shows the teenager being wrestled to the ground and restrained by officers as she pleads with the men, “Get off my back.”

The clip shows a total of four officers attempting to subdue the girl with several more guards arriving at the scene to control the crowd of onlookers.

Brown’s mother, Marea Perry, believes the officers used excessive force with her daughter. “I was sick to my stomach when I watched the video, she was targeted because she was black.”

The Minneapolis NAACP is calling for a boycott of the Mall of America. The organization also wants the shopping center to issue an apology to the teen. “We will not tolerate abuse of children at the hands of MOA security or members of law enforcement,” said Nekima Levy-Pounds, President of the Minneapolis NAACP.

“What happened to Isabella was completely unwarranted, unnecessary and traumatic” she added.

In a statement regarding the incident obtained by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the mall insists that minors are given ample time and opportunity to comply with the curfew policy; refusal may result in arrest.

Brown was not arrested or charged with a crime. Regardless, the child’s mother wants to see the officers held accountable for their actions that could have had a tragic end as the teen suffers from asthma. She struggled to breathe as the four security guards were forcibly pinning her to the ground.

“She lost her humanity, dignity and right to equal treatment.” said Perry. “I wouldn’t want any other parent to have to experience what happened to her.”

The Mall Of America was most recently in the news over the holidays when Black Lives Matter activists staged a protest in the shopping center on behalf of police brutality victim, Jamar Clark.
