Local black businesses have joined the #SelmaForStudents campaign to provide free admission to the film Selma for students in grades 7 through 9. The initiative began in New York but was adopted by eight cities including Philly. The film, directed by Ava Duvernay, tells the story of the historic march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama. Many praise the film for it’s moving depiction of this historic event during the fight for African-American Civil Rights and for it’s very human, well-rounded portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Selma received several Golden Globe nominations and won the Best Original Song category for the Common & John Legend collaboration “Glory.”
Students who are interested in seeing Selma , or parents who want their kids to see the film, must show up at select theaters with a student ID or report card between January 12th and January 19th. Way to go Philly! To view a list of theaters participating in this program CLICK HERE.
