Two weeks after Donovan McNabb was benched during the final 2 minutes of a game, the veteran QB has agreed to a five-year, $78 million extension with the Washington Football Team that could be worth up to $88 million with incentives, a source with knowledge of the agreement told ESPN NFL Insider Michael Smith.
The source said $40 million of the deal will be guaranteed.
Washington Football Team coach Mike Shanahan initially stated his reason for pulling McNabb in the fourth quarter was because he didn’t know the terminology of the offense well enough, and that backup Rex Grossman gave them a better chance to win.
Several days later, Shanahan said he benched McNabb because he didn’t have the “cardiovascular conditioning” needed to run the two minute offense.
In a taped interview running today on ESPN, McNabb tells “Monday Night Football” announcer Mike Tirico that the handling of his benching was “clumsy.”
McNabb will face his former team the Philadelphia Eagles, led by Michael Vick, tonight in Washington.
