Another Democrat has thrown her hat into the 2020 presidential election ring, with Senator Kamala Harris making her bid official on Monday morning. The California senator, who is the first African American, and third US senator since December to enter the race, timed her announcement to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Speaking on “Good Morning America,” Harris said, “This is a moment in time where I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are.” Following the appearance, Harris launched her campaign website, with its slogan, “Kamala Harris For the People,” and revealed her first campaign event for January 27th in Oakland.

Elected to the Senate in 2016, Harris made history as the first Indian-American to serve in the body, as well as just the second black woman. As attorney general of California for six years, she was the first woman, African-American and Indian-American in that role.
