With less than two months left in 2018, it’s safe to say the word of the year can be declared. According to the Collins dictionary folks, they’re selecting one with an environmental bent.

While we may not have paid much attention in the past to the plastic forks and straws given out when ordering food, this year many of us started, along with describing those items as “single-use.”

According to Collins, people are using the term four times as often as just five years ago, with it appearing in news stories and social media campaigns.

Other words that have become more popular in usage this year are “vegan,” “gaslight,” “whitewash,” and from the game Fortnite, “floss,” as in the dance move, not what you forget to do until two hours before visiting the dentist.

Which words have you found yourself using more often this year? Do you know the definition of the other words from this year?
