According to the CDC, 1 in 6 people in this country will be sickened with food poisoning each year, and it’s only getting worse.

Unfortunately, with the most of the food production process being out of our hands, there’s only so much we can do to make sure we stay safe.

The biggest way to prevent food poisoning is by keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold. If a food is meant to be refrigerated, don’t keep it at temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit any longer than it takes you to get from store to home.

The way you store food also plays a role. Never place raw meat, poultry or fish in the fridge where it can drip onto other foods.

If something needs to be defrosted, don’t just throw it on the counter and let it sit. If you have time, let it defrost in the refrigerator. If you’re in a hurry, use the microwave.

Wash your produce, especially the melons with the rough skin where organisms can hide
