The DIVAS are back! Tomorrow, Saturday August 20th at the Dell Music Center, Sheryl Lee Ralph and the D.I.V.A Foundation (The Divinely Inspired Victoriously Aware) will celebrate it’s 2nd annual staging of DIVAS Simply Singing! in Philadelphia after 26 consecutive years in Los Angeles. This charity concert brings awareness to many health issues affecting the African American communities including HIV/AIDS, mental wellness, heart disease, diabetes and HepC and other life threatening diseases.
The concert features performances by well-known artists: Cheryl Pepsii Riley, Keke Wyatt, Tweet, Mack Wilds, Martha Wash, Maysa, Sarah Dash, Jean Carne, Full Force, and Sarita Rochelle, Jaguar Wright, Avery Sunshine (artist subject to change).
DIVAS Simply Singing! will be introducing some young divas to the mix, the new music group BLUSHHH Music under Matthew Knowles label, Music World Entertainment. You know Matthew Knowles as being the manager behind one of the best selling POP/R&B girl groups Destiny’s Child (and Beyonce’s Father). I had the opportunity to sit down with the lovely ladies Sunni and Bunni- the rappers and Tali – the vocalist during their promo photoshoot. The trio has an old school sound with a lot of southern charm; based out of Houston and performing in Philly for the first time. We discussed many topics including: their new single “Old School Back” and upcoming album Old School Hip-Hop Past, Present and Future; their Reality Docu-Series; and their experience thus far as new artists.
They will be compared to many artists (because society likes to compare women), including the groups that came before them like Destiny’s Child; but I discovered they are in a lane by themselves and can continue to stand out and rise to the top if they stay focus and keep voicing their differences.
