Last week it was the Republicans.
This week it’s the Democrat’s turn.
It got off to a rocky start with Florida Congresswoman and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC email controversy.
She tried to speak on Monday morning at Florida delegation breakfast and got boo’d off the stage.
“Boo. Alright now settle down everyone. Everyone settle down. (gavel)”
Wasserman finally stepped aside and got out of the spotlight so that other speakers would not be overshadowed by controversy.
And out of all of those who did speak, the one who stole the evening was —– the First Lady Of The United States who starter her speech by talking about how she and the President are rearing their daughters while living in the White House.
“That is what Barack and I think about every day as we try to guide and protect our girls through the challenges of this unusual life in the spotlight — how we urge them to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain that when someone is cruel, or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level — no, our motto is, when they go low, we go high.”
Oh yes, Mrs. Obama was on fire last night – the best speech of the night.
And the best line of the night – the one that made me cry, and I’m sure many others as well was this one:
“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves — and I watch my daughters — two beautiful, intelligent, black young women — playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters — and all our sons and daughters — now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States.”
After that, it’s a wrap.
That “wake up in a house built by slaves and then watching them play on the white house lawn with their dog” line was brilliant and actually overwhelming if you actually think about living in that reality.
Yes, Cory Booker was great.
Yes, Elizabeth Warren was impressive.
Yes, Bernie Sanders threw his full support behind Hillary Clinton.
But the night belonged to one person and that was Michelle Obama.
