A Piece of Philly Music History Has Been Sold!

An ordinary looking building located at 210 North 12th Street in downtown Philadelphia, constructed in 1930, is hallowed ground; the home of a significant piece of Philly Music History. This was the location of Sigma Sound Studios, where, during the 70’s and 80’s, a great many hit songs, especially associated with the Sound of Philadelphia, were recorded.

Founded in 1968 by legendary recording engineer, Joe Tarsia, Sigma’s three studios and a sound stage hosted sessions featuring Philly artists like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The O’Jays, Delfonics, Billy Paul, Patti Labelle, Teddy Pendergrass, Boyz ll Men, Jill Scott, The Intruders, The Trammps and many more. Producers like Kenny and Leon Huff, Thom Bell and others used the studios to create an unprecedented string of hits that defined “The Philly Sound,” still revered and enjoyed around the world. Also recording at Sigma were artists from all over the country and the world, representing nearly every genre; artists including Jerry Butler, Dusty Springfield, The Jackson 5, Madonna, Whitney Houston, David Bowie, Lou Rawls, Billy Joel, The Whispers, B.B. King, Vanessa Williams, Ashford and Simpson and more! Over 250 Gold and Platinum certified hits were recorded there. You get the idea. Not many studios anywhere can boast such a star-studded history!

Now the building has been sold for $1.55 million to an investment partnership and will be converted to apartments. According to a story by Natalie Kostelni on the Omega Commercial Real Estate Blog, there had been several offers and the deal was done in only 90 days! The new owners have yet to finalize plans so the number of units to be available has yet to be determined.
