On Sunday, October 20, Senator Vincent Hughes opened Philly Speaks on a positive note; the end of the Federal Lockout.

As the topic of the show was education, Senator Hughes welcomed special guests Wade Henderson and Dr. William Hite. Henderson, President and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and The Leadership Conference Education Fund, informed listeners about education on a national level. Dr. Hite, Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia spoke to listeners about the education system in Philadelphia.

Senator Hughes then took a few moments to pay tribute to two Philadelphia legends who passed away, including Dr. Walter P. Lomax, Jr. and Former Councilwoman Augusta Clarke, both leaving behind huge contributions to the city. He also made mention to The Lew Klein Awards, recently held at Temple University for the late E. Steven Collins, former host of Philly Speaks.

On a final note, Senator Hughes encouraged listeners to attend several different events to support Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is October.
