As far back as ancient times with cave men and women, women have played the role of housewives in their marriages, while men commonly bring home the bacon. Overtime this expectation of women has began to diminish due to the independence they have gained through changing times. In 2013, should successful black women be submissive in a relationship? Black women come from an era where they not only took care of their children, but as well as their slave masters’ children. As a slave, they were bred by their masters to be submissive for the entire slave master family and as women they had to also be compliant to their own families.

Women have now found contentment with being their own woman without the baggage of relationships and children. They are exceeding in their careers as lawyers and doctors and are no longer including marriage as a requirement in their lifetime agenda. Successful black women tend to uphold a level of confidence which may be difficult to balance when attempting to be submissive. Being submissive is linked to an act of servility towards a significant other. A successful black woman who’s the boss in her workplace isn’t accustomed to doing for others because others are usually doing for her. For a woman to be submissive she is open to cooking and cleaning after others, but how could that be possible when they wouldn’t do that, usually?

As time progresses into the future women are only becoming more invested into the success of their careers which can lead to a decline in seeking happiness in relationships. Studies have shown that eight in 10 African American female high school students are interested in starting a business. Successful black women are found to be CEOs of multimillion dollar corporations. Because of the confidence that successful black women gain throughout their accomplishments they may lose sight of catering to others.

Therefore, the successful black women that wouldn’t mind being in a relationship should be selfless for that’s how relationships work. The moral of the story is “do what makes you happy.” If you cannot commit to the submissive expectations of being a wife or girlfriend, why not commit to your career? Commit to what you love.
