A dedicated community activist was shot and killed just steps away from his West Philadelphia home. This morning, the victim’s family says the man was loved in his community and they can’t understand why anyone would want to do this.

Family members identify the victim as 55-year-old Gregory Scott.

Scott left his place of work around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday. It was just after 11:15 when he arrived at his home on the 200 block of S Millick Street in West Philadelphia.

He was just steps away from his home when someone opened fire on Scott, shooting him multiple times in the face and head.

When emergency crews arrived Scott still had his keys in his hand.

“Please God. Please let justice prevail for this.”

Veronica Jackson wants the person responsible for her brother’s shooting death to come forward.

Scott was well liked and known as a leader in his community. People in the neighborhood call him “Uncle Chops”.

He worked closely with The Goldcoast Buccaneers as a drill captain. According to the organization’s website, it is a mentor program created to provide life skills to kids.

Jackson tells Action News, “My brother was a good guy, and what happened right now we don’t understand.”

Scott’s friend Hope Quarles says, “To come here, to actually see this, I’m just devastated. How could you take someone’s life like that.”

Family and friends say Scott has five children – one of which works as a paramedic for the City of Philadelphia and rushed to the scene after hearing the address on the radio.

Homicide detectives are still working the case, but at this point they do not have a motive.
