When we walk our son or daughter to the school bus in the morning, we assume that school is the safest place for our children to be during the day. Are our children really safe in school? With violence increasing all over the city, our parents shouldn’t have to worry about their children while they are in school.

Philadelphia police responded to an assault at Simon Gratz Mastery Charter School this morning, when a student attacked the director of a program for special kids. Officials confirmed that one person was taken to the hospital.

Why does it seem as though we punish the parents who are successful at raising their kids? Parents preach school, school, school, and we reward them with dangerous environments and violent classrooms. We need to fix the problem of violence in schools by changing the environment in which they learn. Students think of school as an extension to their street life. School should be a place children go to for learning and not chilling or hanging out. How can we make the case for more money and resources in our schools if they’re not safe to attend? With better environment for learning comes better students.
