Montgomery County officials have ruled that a grenade found in a first-floor court at the King of Prussia Mall is not explosive, authorities said.

Part of the mall was evacuated about an hour ago when security notified Upper Merion Township police that a suspicious device had been found in a planter or flower pot and police ruled the object suspicious, according to Upper Merion Police Chief Ron Fonock.

A Montgomery County bomb squad team arrived and determined the object was not an explosive device, Fonock said.

“They determined that this looks like a hand grenade and hollowed out shell of a hand grenade,” he said, adding that he is not sure whether the device is metal or plastic. “They’re scouring the whole area to make sure they can reopen as normal and no other devices are found.”

The investigation continues into who placed the device there and a possible motive.
