If you had any doubt that paying back your student loan is mandatory, Kenneth Wright’s story will make you think again. Here’s what the U.K.’s Daily Mail reported happened to the Stockton, Calif., man:

A father was dragged from his home and handcuffed in front of his children by a SWAT team looking for his estranged wife — to collect her unpaid student loans.

A stunned Kenneth Wright had his front door kicked in by the raiding party at 6 am yesterday before being dragged onto his front porch, handcuffed and led to a police car with his three children.

He says he was then detained for six hours while officers looked for his wife — who no longer lives at the house.

But before you start looking for the black helicopters in the sky over your home, keep in mind that there may be a lot more going on here. According to Fox News:

A California man who initially claimed to a local television station that he was roughed up by “SWAT team” members who allegedly battered down his front door to execute a search warrant related to his estranged wife’s unpaid student loans was targeted due to an ongoing probe into alleged financial aid fraud …

In a statement to FoxNews.com, Education Department Press Secretary Justin Hamilton confirmed that its Office of Inspector General executed the warrant with the presence of local law enforcement authorities.

“While it was reported in local media that the search was related to a defaulted student loan, that is incorrect,” the statement read. “This is related to a criminal investigation. The Inspector General’s Office does not execute search warrants for late loan payments.”

Either way, I’d stay on the right side of the Education Department. Wouldn’t you?
