Othello:
Ooo my Desdemona
Our lovin’s been so good
You know I wanna hold you
I wonder if I could
Iago:
Such a fine kind of lady
Emilia:
Making the boys so crazy
Iago & Emilia:
There’s something you should know about Desdemona
Othello:
Don’t ya ever leave me
Don’t know what I’d do
Can’t I just believe your love is really true?
Iago:
She just might deceive you
Take you for a fool
Othello:
I can’t stand the thought of someone touching you- The Kids from Fame, 1982
Before my high school English class formally introduced me to the text of Shakespeare’s Othello, I became a fan through the magic of musical theater on TV. The song Desdemona was from a memorable episode of Fame, my favorite Thursday night NBC show until The Cosby’s showed up. This musical number was a great way to introduce kids like me, to the depth of Shakespeare’s work without getting lost in the language. By the time I made it to high school I was familiar with the story thus making the reading of the complicated language bearable. I am now a big Shakespeare fan. With that said, allow me to re-introduce you to this musical number so you can be inspired to support a local production of Othello in June.
A local theater company is mounting a production of Othello from June 10th, 2011 through June 26th, 2011 Mr. Carlo “Afloe” Campbell is playing the roll of Othello. The West Philly Native has been a fixture in the Philly music scene for several years now and he’s truly exhibiting his growth as a performer by landing this role. Carlo is a free spirit which houses many talents. Rarely do you hear of rappers taking an interest in classic theater but “Afloe” is quite a rare individual. As your cultural ambassador, I challenge you to think out of the box and check out this unique performer in the role of a lifetime. I’ve included one of his music videos for you to check out.
