Dear Oprah,
Today at 4pm Eastern Time the world will see the last episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah, you have been a part of our afternoon routine, part of our psychological landscape and part of our family for 25 years. We’ve watched you grow, shrink, explore, mature, over come, give back and inspire others to do the same. As a brown, and round, young woman from North Philly your development into an entertainment icon has encouraged me to pursue a career in broadcasting. As a teen I thought “if this lady who is brown like me and not a size 2 can have a successful national TV show, why can’t I make it in the business?” You have been a motivating force for many before you even opened your mouth.
I’m not ashamed to say that I am a life long fan, Ms. Winfrey. I’ve listened to your critics and learned some valuable things about people, perception and success. 1) I’ve learned that no matter how much good you do in the world, everyone won’t see it, recognize it or give you credit for it. Good deeds should be done for the goodness in the deed not the recognition for the deed itself. 2) I’ve learned that you have to define you. PERIOD. 3) I’ve learned that our worst critics are self & family (which can be extended to one’s race or culture) in that order. 4) I’ve learned that if you truly dedicate your life to living on and for a purpose you will be blessed all of your days. Finally I’ve learned that in the end you must follow your heart no matter what the world might say.
I am leaving my day job at 3pm today to head down to Yesha Ministries in South Philly for the final show viewing party. I’m taking my tissues, two of my co-workers and a notepad (in case I feel inspired to write my ideas and feelings). I just want to say to you Ms. Oprah Winfrey, thank you for inspiration, your wisdom, your leadership and your enlightenment. Thank you for 25 years of purpose.
