Philadelphia bus riders should double-check their routes before heading out this weekend as SEPTA prepares to launch the first phase of a major bus network overhaul.

SEPTA will introduce the changes Sunday, Aug. 23, and Monday, Aug. 24, just as Philadelphia students return to school. The first phase includes two new bus routes, six route extensions and the elimination of seven existing routes.

The changes will affect about 30 bus routes, according to SEPTA. Agency officials want riders to review their trips before traveling because several routes will follow new paths or stop operating entirely.

The new network will add Route 72, which will connect Frankford Transit Center with Cedarbrook Plaza, and Route 76, which will connect Rising Sun Loop with Columbus Commons. SEPTA will also extend Route 45 to the Navy Yard seven days a week.

Meanwhile, SEPTA will discontinue Routes 35, 47M, 62, 78, 80, 89 and 106 during the first phase.

SEPTA has started replacing bus stop signs throughout Philadelphia to help riders adjust. The agency plans to install about 13,000 permanent signs across the system. Officials also encourage riders to use SEPTA’s new bus network trip planner and mobile app before leaving home.

The changes represent the first comprehensive redesign of SEPTA’s bus network in the agency’s history. SEPTA says the redesign aims to improve reliability, increase service frequency and make the system easier to navigate.

The agency plans to roll out additional changes in two more phases. Phase Two will arrive in February 2027, while Phase Three will follow in June 2027.
