An off-duty Philadelphia police officer opened fire Monday morning after confronting suspects who allegedly attempted to steal the officer’s Dodge Charger in the city’s Eastwick section, according to police and local reports.
The incident began shortly after 3 a.m. near South 70th Street and Waxwing Place, where investigators say suspects broke into the officer’s vehicle. The suspects reportedly pushed the Charger around the block before attempting to start it.
At some point, the off-duty officer encountered the suspects and fired several shots. Investigators recovered at least five shell casings from the area. The officer was not injured.
Police believe the suspects fled in a stolen red Lexus ES 350 before abandoning it in the Parkside section of Philadelphia. Authorities say they then switched to another stolen vehicle.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not publicly identified the suspects or announced any arrests.
The shooting comes amid continued concerns over vehicle thefts in Philadelphia, with investigators examining how the suspects gained access to the vehicles and whether the incident is connected to other recent car thefts.
