Promising to foster a better relationship between law enforcement personnel and the public, the mother of Trayvon Martin has announced her candidacy for a seat on the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.

Making the announcement on Monday, Sybrina Fulton told supporters, “When my son got shot down, I stood up, and I’m still standing. We gotta know what law enforcement jobs are, and residents need to know their rights.” Fulton will be taking on Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert for the position, which Commissioner Barbara Jordan will vacate in 2020 due to term limits.

Fulton became an activist after her son, an unarmed black teen, was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in 2012. Martin’s death, and Zimmerman’s subsequent acquittal, sparked national outrage and helped give rise to the Black Lives Matter movement.
