If you missed the U.S. Open match between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka you missed a match filled with varying degrees of emotion. First, let’s get to know Naomi Osaka.

Naomi Osaka is 20 years old and is of Japanese and Haitian descent. Her father, Leonard Francois, saw what Serena and Venus’ father, Richard Williams did and Leonard decided he wanted to do the same with his 2 girls, Naomi and Mari. Here is what is on the line at the start of the match on Saturday, if Naomi wins she will become the first Japanese tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles tournament. She will also beat her idol, Serena Williams. On the line for Serena is a record-tying 24th title. She needs 25 titles for the all-time title.
At the start of the match Naomi showed she did not come to play with Serena. The match was competitive. The referee then accuses Serena of getting coaching from her coach (this is not permitted in tennis). Serena did not like the accusation.
The back forth continues between Serena and the ref. She slams her tennis racket on the ground breaking it. He deducts an important point from her and gives it to Naomi. She then calls him a “thief.” The match ends with Naomi winning but it is a very bittersweet moment. Naomi is crying and you can tell she has mixed emotions. Of course she wanted to win but she didn’t want to win under these circumstances. The crowd was boo’ing her. But Serena showed her maternal side when she asked everyone to respect the moment for Naomi
I really didn’t think it was possible to love Serena anymore than I already do. Social media also had lots to say.
