How many times have you faced this situation? You’re applying for a job but you have no idea who your cover letter is going to. What do you do? Or what shouldn’t you do? Have you tried using “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Recruiter”? These aren’t great openings, but you could do a lot worse. According to the staff of Business Insider, “To Whom It May Concern” is the absolute worst manner of handling the start of a letter to a hiring manager whose name you are unsure of. “Dear Sir” or “Madam” is the next worst in the rankings. This is way too formal. Try reaching out to the receptionist of the company you are applying to and ask for the name of the department head. Develop a relationship with the receptionist, you never know who chimes in on the hiring process.
