All month long we are sitting down with LOCAL HISTORY MAKERS for Black History Month, and our last interview includes Martin Vaughn.

Martin was Captain of the 1974 Team and a two- time record setting All-Ivy League Quarterback. He held numerous records while at Penn for Touchdown Passes, (Season and Career), Passing Yardage, (Season and Career), Total Offense, (Season and Career) and was ranked 5th in the country in Total Offense his Senior season & played in the FIRST collegiate football game EVER that included TWO BLACK starting quarterbacks EVER!

Martin Vaughn is the Executive Vice President of Competech SmartCard Solutions, Inc. Mr. Vaughn is responsible for developing the corporate market penetration strategies for public and private payers and healthcare providers. A seasoned Senior Business Development Executive, Mr. Vaughn utilizes his experience to initiate service introductions, identify new market opportunities, develop strategic marketing plans and negotiate high-priority partnerships to drive market expansion and revenue growth for Competech.

Prior to joining Competech, Vaughn served as a Business Development Consultant with Baker and Company LLC, a Philadelphia based management consulting firm specializing in developing contracting opportunities in the Healthcare and Federal Government sectors for Minority Owned Businesses.

Mr. Vaughn spent over 25 years in the financial services arena in a senior executive capacity where he established and developed the corporate finance departments and spearheaded the business development initiatives at several firms. His client base included both public and private institutional investors, as well as working with numerous corporations in helping them to access the capital markets to address their financing needs. He worked on over 300 equity and debt transactions as well as a number of private financings. Mr. Vaughn was a founding member of the Equity Group at Blaylock & Partners, LP., where the firm became the first minority-owned company to co-manage an equity transaction AVIS, and also lead manage two corporate bond deals, Tennessee Valley Authority, (TVA) and Texaco, Inc.

Mr. Vaughn was educated at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Economics. Also, as an undergraduate, Martin was Captain of the 1974 Team and a two- time record setting All-Ivy League Quarterback. He held numerous records while at Penn for Touchdown Passes, (Season and Career), Passing Yardage, (Season and Career), Total Offense, (Season and Career) and was ranked 5th in the country in Total Offense his Senior season.

In 1975, he was selected as the first round pick for The Philadelphia Bell Football Club, of the now defunct World Football League.

Mr. Vaughn is married to the former Terri Phifer. They have four children Martin II, Marquis, Marcus and Mikayla. Mikayla has followed in her father’s athletic footsteps and plays Division 1 basketball for the University of Notre Dame. They also have two grandchildren, Jameson and Thatcher Vaughn. In his spare time he is active in community service projects, sports, music, and traveling with his family.
