Beside dealing with legal issues with her ex-husband, R&B singer, Mary J. Blige can celebrate because she has been selected to receive the ‘Breakthrough Performance Award’ at The 29th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. She is receiving this for her role in the Netflix film “Mudbound.”

“Mary J. Blige is a global superstar in the world of music who continues to make her mark as an actress in both television and film,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In her current film ‘Mudbound,’ Blige gives a quiet yet fantastic performance as Florence Jackson, a strong woman supporting her sharecropper family in rural Mississippi.”

Jennifer Hudson, Lupita Nyong’o, Felicity Huffman, Rosamund Pike, and Jeremy Renner are some of the names that won this award in the past. Lupita and Hudson went on to win Academy Awards for those same roles, while Huffman, Pike, and Renner were nominated. Maybe there’s a chance Mary can get a nomination.

The awards gala will be held on January 2nd and will be hosted by Mary Hart
