Tomorrow, Nov. 28 is #GivingTuesday, the day when nonprofits around the world encourage their supporters to donate to year-end campaigns. This marks the sixth annual – global day dedicated to giving back at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season (day after Cyber Monday).
The awareness initiative was started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation as a response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season.
On Philly Speaks this past Sunday (November 26) we discussed Thanksgiving recaps and had a conversation with our listeners – allowing them to call in about a nonprofit that started or supported. Our lines were ringing off the hook to the final minute of the show.

Philadelphia Black Women’s Health Project, was established by 100 Philadelphia women who attended the First National Conference on Black Women’s Health Issues in Atlanta, Georgia in 1983. The ladies recognized that the “voices” of African-American women were largely unheard in the Philadelphia health community and mobilized their efforts to establish the Philadelphia Black Women’s Health Project as the “voice.”

To make a difference showing acts of kindness to underserved inner city youth through community outreach through fighting hunger, offering financial assistance, and providing basic necessities such as clothing, shoes, and other items as needed. ENG members are dedicated to impacting the lives of each child in a different way by showing that people genuinely care and understand the importance of being that helping hand to others.

The Erik James Montgomery Foundation creates photographic public art to inform the entire world about the world they live in. Additionally, the adolescents in our programs learn important strategies to overcome low self-esteem, unrealistic self image and sub-standard academic scores. This is accomplished through short and long-term workshops held at public schools, professional photography studios, correctional facilities, churches and community centers.

Team OverTime, (T.O.T.) is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to provide emotional, mental and financial support to cancer patients during current and post cancer treatment. This organization has been persistently spreading cancer awareness to the community since 2013 and has launched an apparel brand to push positive sentiment to both the patients and their loved ones.
CancerWho? is an apparel brand created by Team OverTime to bring back a positive message for everyone in the fight against cancer.

College Possible is making college admission and success possible for low-income students through an intensive curriculum of coaching and support.
Women Against Abuse womenagainstabuse.org
Women Against Abuse has operated Philadelphia’s only safe havens for victims of domestic violence. The mission of Women Against Abuse is to provide quality, compassionate and nonjudgmental services in a manner that fosters self-respect and independence in persons experiencing intimate partner violence and to lead the struggle to end domestic violence through advocacy and community education.
People’s Emergency Center pec-cares.org
The People’s Emergency Center’s mission is to nurture families, strengthen neighborhoods and drive change in West Philadelphia. PEC offers affordable housing, job training, parenting and early childhood education, financial education and planning, life skills and technology coursework. PEC seeks to change the life trajectory for the women and children who seek its services and inspire them to aspire to new heights.

Coded by Kids provides free tech education programs to inner city youth. Help them give the gift of tech education to the students of Willard Elementary School in Kensington. By joining the movement, you’ll be giving students in 3rd and 4th grade the opportunity to learn technology skills through our coding program. Together, we can ensure that these students have a safe space to learn how to reason, problem-solve, and think out-of-the box using technology. Our goal is to raise $1,000 on Giving Tuesday, to unlock a $1,000 match from a generous donor.
MenzFit menzfit.org
Menzfit began in March 2001 to address the employment needs of low–income men, and has since helped more than 6,100 men compete for jobs. This has created more than $54,000,000 in taxable income (based on an average salary of $17,500). MenzFit’s interventions increase employment outcomes during the initial interview process as well as after their clients have begun working.
