A decade ago, cofounders of The Roots, Tariq “Black Thought” and Ahmir “Questlove”, as well as the group’s then manager, Rich Nichols, had a conversation that gave birth to the concept of bringing together some of the world’s most cutting edge and blazing artists, to perform in their hometown of Philly. A decade later, The Roots along with their current manager, Shawn Gee of Maverick and their picnic producers, have culled a stellar collection of individuals who grace studios, stages, receive airplay, streaming, sales, awards and have coveted favor with global audiences. Former festivals performers have included  Nas, John Legend, Janelle Monae, Will Smith, Willow Smith, Public Enemy, Usher, Kid Cudi, Gary Clark Jr., and many others. Announced today, this milestone year’s line up includes, Pharrell X The Roots, Solange, Pete Rock, Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, Scott Storch, Lil Wayne, 21 Savage, Philly’s own PNB Rock, Gilles Peterson, joined by other performers. The 10th Annual Roots Picnic will take place Saturday June 3rd, Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in Philly.
