In February during Work with Karen its Black HER-Story Month where we are celebrating Black History month with #SheFacts of female trailblazers.
Why We Love Her: Today we are honoring one the original stone cold foxy ladies of the 70’s, Ms. Pamela Grier. She played roles that were known as “Blaxploitation” She insisted the portrayals were the ugly elements of the black community that still exist in the wake of the civil rights movement. She made those roles her own and look extraordinary doing it.
Stats: Born Pamela Suzette Grier was born on May 26, 1949 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. 1967 placed 3rd for the Miss Universe beauty pageant. Known for her most historical roles as Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown
Ladies First: Pam Grier quickly established herself as a staple of the so-called “blaxploitation” films of the 1970s, which were films that were geared towards the African American audiences that played heavily on black stereotypes. .
Impact: Grier’s characters always stood out and empowered black women who relied on nothing but their own strength to achieve their goals. In the American imagination she exist in a way that is permanent. “She represents a self-reliant, dynamic female figure that doesn’t have to forgo femininity for potency, for militant power.”
