First Black Women to Own PR Firm in the U.S. Dies

Inez Y. Kaiser, the first African-American woman to own a nationally recognized public relations firm, has passed away. Kaiser, who was born in Overland Park, gave up her job as a home economics teacher to launch her own PR business called Inez Kaiser & Associates back in 1957. Aside from being the first Black woman to own a PR firm, Kaiser was recognized as the first African-American woman to start a business in Kansas City, Missouri. She also was the first Black woman to be a part of the Public Relations Society of America and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. While Nixon and Ford served as presidents, she counseled them on issues faced by minority women in business. She was a longtime advocate for the advancement of African-American women. Although she was a proud Republican – because she claimed all of the individuals who helped her start her business were affiliated with the Republican Party – she cast her vote for President Obama while he was running for president. “You didn’t mess with her,” her son Rick Kaiser said in a statement. “She would harass you, badger you, hound you until she got what she wanted.” She passed away on Sunday at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park. Kaiser was 98. Read more.

Prince’s Paisley Park Will Soon be Up for Sale

Bremer Bank, which is overseeing Prince’s estate, is putting Paisley Park and other pieces of his property up for sale. According to a statement from the bank, they want to “immediately begin to list and market” in efforts to “take advantage of the current market.” Paisley Park, at 60,000-square-feet, is worth about $7 million. His other properties are reportedly worth $21 million combined. Alison Hauck, a trust officer, said that the revenue generated from selling his properties can help tackle estate administration fees and income tax bills. She claims that keeping the properties is accumulating expensive bills. “Carrying these properties is not in the estate’s best interest,” said Hauck. Prince’s Turks and Caicos property was listed along with Paisley Park. Read more.
