Jessica White, 29, was visiting her mother at the John Adams Houses in the Bronx when a gunman opened fire near her and her three children.

White was killed around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday as she shielded her kids from oncoming bullets. She worked long hours at a downtown restaurant and wanted to spend time with her children in the nearby park. Her mother, Gola White, said her grandchildren saw their mother hit the ground.

At the time of the report, the children were unaware that White was dead, according to her cousin Tina Pierre.

“He took away everything,” Pierre said. “I can’t believe she’s no longer here. And I have to tell my little cousins.”

The New York Daily News writes White was caught in the crossfire of a dispute police believe was gang-related.

White was described as a loving mother to her children, ages three, five, and nine. For her mother, this loss doubles in pain. Her son was killed years prior as the victim of neighborhood violence. She moved to the Adams Houses as a means to escape.

“If I wasn’t living here this never would have happened,” Gola White said to the Daily News. “She never would’ve been here.”

According to the Daily News, police have not made any arrests and are looking for answers. The suspect, they say, was wearing a ski mask.

Diana Void, White’s mother-in-law, said her family is shattered. Her husband is now left to raise their children alone.
