Three teens are dead after allegedly crashing their stolen car into a Tampa Bay pond, ABC reports.
The teens are identified as 16-year-old Dominique Battle, 15-year-old Ashaunti Butler, and 15-year-old Laniya Miller.
Between the three of them, the girls had reportedly racked up seven grand theft auto charges against them in the last year alone.
The tragic night allegedly began after the girls asked a friend, 35-year-old Damian Marriott, to give them a ride to a local park. When Marriott stopped the car to go to Walmart, the girls reportedly stole the car.
The first police car that spotted the teens on the run didn’t pull them over for driving without their headlights because “it didn’t meet the sheriff department’s criteria for a pursuit,” the site explained.
The second deputy who spotted the car, confirmed it was reported stolen and followed the vehicle from a distance.
Once the authorities closed in on the stolen car, the girls drove off right into the pond. The officers tried to save the girls, but it was too late. The young women had all drowned.
According to local sheriffs, incidents of car theft by St. Petersburg youth is no new feat.
We are hoping this recent tragedy will be a wake up call for any teenagers who want to participate in such a dangerous crime.
Prayers go out to the families affected by this horrible tragedy.
