Quest Love Roots

Today In Hip-Hop: The Roots Release “Things Fall Apart” On This Date In 1999

In our new web series “Paying Homage” it was only right that we showed love to the great Roots Crew!

On this date in hip-hop history, The Roots released their critically acclaimed album Things Fall Apartfeaturing the likes of Mos Def, Eve, Erykah Badu, & Beanie Sigel, this album, no matter what your age, no matter what your background, stands the test of time!

We spoke with 3 influential hip-hop figures in the Philly scene to discuss the musical impact The Roots really had, especially when it comes to generation to generation. Whether you are 45 or 25, The Roots crew have stood the test of time.

West Phillys own hip-hop artist Chill Moody (can you say #nicethings), and legendary DJ’s DJ Jay Ski and the worlds #1 blind DJ, DJ Touchtone weigh in with why The Roots have stayed relevant in a genre that doesn’t have a long shelf life, the impact Things Fall Apart had on their career, and some never heard before stories of each of their encounters with the crew.

From Questlove loosing his passport & Touchtone find it, DJ Jay Ski witnessing their first record played on radio, watching them perform on South St. as Squared Roots, to the advice and impacts they have had on a generation of musicians such as Chill Moody.

It’s more important then ever to pay homage to those who have successfully accomplished things that people can only dream of, and The Roots have done more than that, they have created a whole generation of dreamers because of the path they have laid for the next generation of musicians and hip-hop acts to follow, and we can’t salute you enough for that!
