KK Brown and Frank “Scooby” Sirius, Chuck Brown’s daughter and the Chuck Brown bandleader are performing at the Howard Theater this Saturday, May 16th, the 3rd anniversary of Chuck Brown’s death. The show starts at 10 p.m. But when it’s going to end, if you know anything about go-go, the end time is nothing you can predict.

The legendary go-go music artist, a brand of funk, jazz, R&B, blues and almost every other genre of Black music under the sun, was known for his propulsive hits that often lasted 10 minutes or more. Though go-go is a musical genre favored mostly by folks from the DMV (D.C., Maryland and Virginia) Brown took it all over the world and is credited as the genre’s king.

“I miss him,” says KK. “But we’re still cranking. And y’all still pumpin’ it.” She says her family is ‘blessed,” and she’s still reveling in memories of being on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage with him.

“My father didn’t like the water but he came because of what you did for the black colleges,” she says. “He doesn’t like boats but he loved the Tom Joyner cruise.”

Chuck Brown will be the subject of an Unsung profile on TV One this June.
