In an interesting exchange with Joy Reid, filling in for Ed Schultz on MSNBC’s The Ed Show, Georgetown Professor and political analyst Michael Eric Dyson said that Christianity is full of homoeroticism.

Reid engaged Dyson on the topic of Republicans appropriating the legacy of Rosa Parks to perpetuate racism and homophobia, and he had this to say about their hypocrisy:

I mean it’s — well, first of all, it’s scurrilous, but it’s the same as using Jesus in making Jesus co-sign all of this bigotry here. Jesus was a Jew who, around whom a religion was made. So the anti-Semitism of many of the Christians is ironic to begin with.

And then secondly, the gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual stuff – look through the Bible. There’s a lot of interesting things. The same men who will stand up in the church of all men. “I put my God, Jesus, overall women. I love him more than I love her.”

Hmmm. Do you really? That sounds interestingly homoerotic to people who are outside your religious traditions. I’m not suggesting it is but I’m suggesting that there are some very interesting, subtle, narrative tensions within the Bible itself and within Christianity beyond that.

Homoeroticism is defined as sexual attraction or tension between memebers of the same sex.

See the clip below:

This is not Dyson’s first time making the sexual political in a controversial statement.

As previously reported by NewsOne, Dyson has called out author Sophia A. Nelson, Roland Martin and Pastor Jamal Bryant, who in an exclusive for Newsone said that he felt “jilted” by President Barack Obama‘s decision to show his support for marriage equality. Filling in for Shultz, Dyson said that religion often cloaks bigotry and is the equivalent of being a “sexual redneck.”

“Come on, Sophia, Roland and Jamal, don’t use God to co-sign your bigotry.” He then exposes the hypocrisy of the Black church at large by saying, ” I ain’t never been to a Black church that turns down a gay tithe.”
