Prince’s family is suing the doctor who prescribed Prince the pain medication that led to his untimely death. The lawsuit states that the doctor failed to treat him for opiate addiction and that makes him responsible for Prince’s death. The doctor does admit to prescribing a different opioid to Prince in the days before he died and putting the prescription in his bodyguard’s name to protect his privacy. The lawsuit states that the doctor had an opportunity and duty to diagnose and treat Prince’s opioid addiction.
Is the doctor at fault for not treating Prince’s opioid addiction? One could argue that Prince would have received the drugs from another source had the doctor not prescribed it. In attempting to treat an addiction, friends and family need to be involved and the doctor would have needed Prince’s permission to discuss with anyone else.
