Jordans are a hot commodity and five people got caught smuggling thousand of pairs of counterfeit kicks into New York and New Jersey. Had the sneakers been real, the lot would have been worth just about $73 million. According to reports, the fake sneakers were shipped in from China to a Newark port between January 2016 and June 2018, and were being sold for around $200 a pair. Each of the five charged is likely to face up to 20 years in prison.
“The five defendants in this case allegedly counterfeited over $70 million in fake Nike shoes and sold them to buyers on the U.S. market,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in a statement. “I commend our law enforcement partners for helping to bring today’s charges, which send a clear message to would-be counterfeiters: ‘Just don’t do it.'” (CBS SPORTS)
