“We hope to tell an amazing story of a culture that came into being in the South Bronx, a part of the US that people had pretty much given up on, and which came to dominate the popular imagination for decades after”

For some, what is the Smithsonian? The Smithsonian is a group of museums and research centers that are funded by the US government for the sole purpose of spreading knowledge. Well, now the Smithsonian is honoring the complex and impactful history of hip-hop. The anthology will aim to catalog the history using a 300-page collection of vintage along with 9 CDs. Huib Schipper the curator and director of the Smithsonian Folkway said the idea of creating a hip-hop anthology stemmed from the opening of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture had opened.

The anthology will include notes, essay, images, and design. The Smithsonian Institute has started a kick-starter campaign to help fund the initiative until November 16. Huib Schipper and Dr. Dwandalyn Reese (Curator of the Music and Performing Arts museum) sits down with Pigeonsandplanes.com to discuss the importance of this anthology as well as the need to open the conversation regarding hip-hop and its cultural significance and impact.
