Tiger Woods delivered his trademark fist pump after nailing an improbable birdie on the 16th hole. With that, the crowd erupted just like they did in Woods’ glory days — and the comeback was on.
Woods sank another birdie on the 18th hole and went into the clubhouse with a two-stroke lead yesterday that held up at the Memorial Tournament. Andres Romero and Rory Sabbatini placed second.
The victory was his fifth at the Memorial and his 73rd overall title, which tied him with Jack Nicklaus for second on golf’s career wins list. Nicklaus, who founded the Memorial, was sitting green-side. Woods shot a 5-under par-67 in the final round.
“Boy, I hit it good today,” Woods said afterward.
Woods entered the day trailing by four shots while battling the flu. He birdied four of his first eight holes and then three of his final four. It marked his second win of the PGA season.
