Stevie Wonder had to videotape his salute to Prince at the BET Awards Sunday night, because he was performing overseas at the Glastonbury music festival, where he dedicated his entire set to another pop culture icon, the late Michael Jackson.
In addition to performing hits from his long and successful career – including his classic “Living for the City” and his own take on the Beatles’ “We Can Work it Out” – Wonder delivered a touching harmonica version of the late King of Pop’s “Human Nature.” (Watch clips below.)
The 60-year-old invited Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis up onstage and sang his famous version of “Happy Birthday” to celebrate the festival’s 40th year.
“It was a high point on which to close an event which this year basked in glorious sunshine for four days, and Wonder’s musical prowess and interaction with the fans helped ease the pain of England’s loss to Germany at the soccer World Cup,” noted the Associated Press.
Earlier in the day tens of thousands of people crowded around giant screens erected for the big match, only to see their team crash out 4-1.
Around 150,000 people attended the annual festival in Pilton, England, which also included performances from Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz, Muse, Radiohead, Scissor Sisters and Shakira.
