*Veteran rapper, Ice-T is planning to share his experiences and speak with Texan foster families and children in lieu of foster care month. The gangster rapper has had a first hand experience with foster care. He lost both his parents to heart attacks by the time he was in seventh grade. He then lived with his neglectful aunt in South Central L.A., where many of his experiences fueled his impactful career.

“My aunt didn’t really want me,” he explained to the San Antonio Express-News. “She’d raised her kids. I came with the paperwork. I lived in a vacuum and I ended up connected to gangs looking for belonging. We all look to be connected to somebody, be it through cliques, clubs, or gangs.”

Ice-T will be speaking at the Texas Foster Youth Conference on May 29. Conference coordinators are excited to bring the rapper to the children because of the hesitation kids tend to have toward more authoritative figures like police officers.

“He was an orphan early on and he knows the issues our foster youth face,” said Nancy Bonilla, conference organizer. “Because of his celebrity status, he brings recognition to the issues, and a big part of the conference is to bring awareness to the issues.”
