Sisterlocks FAQ:

I must admit, I’ve heard of Sisterlocks in my own personal natural hair care travels, but I’ve never researched them to see what they truly were.  To be honest, if a woman walked in front of me on the street with her hair styled like this, I probably wouldn’t know.  In saying this, these 5 frequently asked questions are just as much mine as they are questions from many other women wonderers.  So, let’s start off with the basic of all basic questions… What really are Sisterlocks?

1. What are Sisterlocks?

Sisterlocks are a natural hair trend that consists of (dread) locks so tiny that they almost look like strands of hair.  The Sisterlocks are created with a special locking tool and a precise grid to make each one uniform.  According to sisterlocks.com, “As the hair grows, new growth [newly grown un-relaxed hair] is incorporated by reverse braiding toward the scalp using a small hook-like tool. Sisterlocks are thinner and more flexible than traditional dreadlocks, which makes them easy to curl and to pin into up-swept hairstyles. No hair extensions are needed because the client’s hair grows abundantly and luxuriously over time.”

2. How long does one’s hair have to be to begin Sisterlocks?

About 1 ½-2 inches of natural un- relaxed hair is generally needed to begin Sisterlocks for ease in styling and maintenance.

3. How long does it normally take to have Sisterlocks installed?

It can take anywhere from 7-10 hrs plus.

What salons in Philadelphia can I go to in order to get Sisterlocks?

-Asayah Loc Nurturing and Styling – 515 E Vernon Rd Philadelphia, PA 19119 (http://asayah.vpweb.com/?prefix=www)

-Str8Relaxed2Loc – 6600 Block of Chew Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19119 (http://www.str8relaxed2loc.com/About-Us.html)

4. Everyone says, Sisterlocks are extremely expensive… is this true?

Sisterlocks can run you anywhere from $400-$900 depending on length, density, and your natural hair vs. relaxed/ hair. I’ve found from several sources that if you have about 6 inches of hair, it can cost around $600-$750. After this initial styling, you will need to get your Sisterlocks retightened which can run you upwards to $200. Whether this is considered pricey or not, is a personal opinion per each individual.  To me, however, this is BIG BUCKS!

5. Where do I go to take a class if I’d like to learn how to create Sisterlocs?

Because Sisterlocks is considered a trademarked style, not everyone can claim to be a Sisterlock stylist.  You must literally be certified, from what I’ve discovered.  Visit this website for information on attending a local class within the Philadelphia area.  http://www.sisterlocks.com/philadelphia.html  All materials are provided within the course’s tuition fee.  There even is a Sisterlocks Cruise promoted on the website, where one can sail off into the sunset while learning the tricks of the Sisterlocks trade.
